S. Martinho
S. Martinho

“By St. Martin tastes the wine.” In Portugal, it is around this saying that is celebrated on November 11. Tradition has it that the party is made around a bonfire where chestnuts are roasted, water-foot and jeropiga are drunk and the new wine is tasted. The date is associated with the celebration of the wine maturation that results from the last vintage, with the holy day being the recommended date to taste the new productions. The ancient legend says that on this day, a Roman soldier, named Martinho de Tours, on a very rainy day, shared his cloak with a drenched and cold beggar. To compensate for it, God stopped the rain and “offered” it three summer days in midsummer, the so-called “summer of St. Martin.”

Fulfill the tradition and look for one of the chestnut carts that stop at every corner of the city, and delight us with the famous “hot and good”. ones.
