Meu rico Santo António | My dear Santo António

Lisboa está em festa. O cheiro à sardinha assada já anda nas ruas, assim como a alegria e as cantigas das marchas populares já animam os bairros da cidade. Esta semana comemora-se o feriado municipal, a 13 de Junho, em honra de Santo António.

Se anda com pouca sorte ao amor e quer encontrar a sua cara metade, pois venha a Lisboa fazer uma prece ao Santo, que tem fama de casamenteiro e não costuma falhar com as suas promessas.

Prova disso são os famosos casamentos de Santo António que todos os anos marcam a união de vários casais, que o escolheram para abençoar as uniões. Este ano são 16 os casais que no dia 12 de Junho se vão unir em matrimónio na Sé de Lisboa. Um momento muito típico das festas da cidade.

Depois, no dia 13, decorre a procissão, que tem início na igreja de Santo António, pelas 17h00, e que é uma tradição religiosa que remonta ao século XVI. A marcha percorre as ruas circundantes à igreja, que se encontra numa das zonas mais históricas da cidade.

Se preferir uma abordagem diferente ao Santo António, as festas da cidade oferecem-lhe o concurso de tronos em honra do santo, que decorre no Atrium Saldanha, a cinco minutos a pé do America Diamonds Hotel.

Fazer tronos a Santo António é uma tradição lisboeta nascida por alturas do terramoto de 1755, quando a sua igreja ficou destruída. A população começou então a fazer tronos para peditórios que depois revertiam para a reconstrução da igreja de Santo António. Hoje, os lisboetas mantêm viva essa tradição.

O Santo António de Lisboa, considerado o Padroeiro pelo povo – embora o Patrono oficial da cidade seja S. Vicente – dá origem à maior festa popular do país, enchendo a capital de turistas que querem ver de perto os manjericos, as sardinhas assadas e porque não encontrar uma alma gémea encomendada a este Santo conhecido como casamenteiro e das causas perdidas. Ai meu rico Santo António!

Lisbon is in a popular festive season. The smell of roast sardine is already in the streets, as well the joy and the songs of the Popular Marches animate the neighbourhoods of the city. This week, is celebrated the municipal holiday, 13^th June, in honour of Santo António.

If you have a little luck to love and want to find your soul mate, come to Lisbon to make a prayer to the saint, who has a reputation of matchmaker and doesn’t usually fail with his promises.

Proof of that are the famous weddings of Santo António that every year marks the union of many couples, who choose him to bless their unions. This year there are sixteen couples on 12^th June who will unite in marriage in the Lisbon Cathedral. A very typical moment of the Lisbon festivities.

Then, on 13^th June, follow the procession that begins at the church of Santo António, at 5 pm, which is a religious tradition that dates back to the sixteenth century. The march runs the streets surround of the church, which is located in of the most historic areas of the city.

If you prefer a different approach of the Santo António, the city festivities offer you the thrones contest in honour of the saint, which happens in Atrium Saldanha, five minutes walk from America Diamonds Hotel. Making thrones to Santo António is a Lisbon tradition started by the time of the 1755 earthquake, when its church was destroyed. Then the population began making thrones to help rebuilding the church. Nowadays, the Lisbon people preserve this tradition.

The Lisbon Saint, considered the Patron of the city – although the official patron is St. Vicente – gives rise to the most popular festivity in the country, filling the capital with tourists who want to see closely the basil, the roast sardines and why not find a soul mate ordered to this saint known as matchmaker and the lost causes.
